JBX Generic Terrain Textures for X-Plane
Version 566.1, June 24, 2001
---------------------------------------

Please also read the included license.txt file.

These textures are a replacement for X-Plane's generic
terrain textures. I tried to create something that looks
more realistic than the original textures. Creating generic
terrain textures is a challenge - if you make them very
homogeneous (like the X-Plane default textures), they will
look boring and not very realistic. On the other hand, if
you include lots of interesting details, the result will
not suit all sorts of landscapes equally, and you will get
an ugly "repeating pattern" effect from higher altitudes.
Also, the textures must be rotation-invariant, so they
tile perfectly regardless of their orientation. I think
I achieved a fairly good compromise with these textures.

Installation:
-------------
Make a backup copy of your original "terrain" folder in the
directory "Resources\textures", then replace the original
folder with the one in this package.

Credits:
--------
I used graphics from the following sources (some of them
are heavily modified, but provided an excellent basis):

- Grass and mountain vegetation based on Gary Mercer's
  "3D textures" set

- Grass-water coastlines by Tommy Soderqvist; he made
them especially for my textures - thanks a lot!

- Snow based on snow texture by Thad Parker

- Water based on FS 2000 water textures by M. Suzuki

- City textures made from various satellite photos

- Mars texture based on an original image from the Mars
Global Surveyor orbiter. The image data base is located
  at http://www.msss.com/moc_gallery/index.html.

- Many thanks also to Evan Owen who corrected the color
of the city borders to make them look more realistic.
